If you are a builder, roofer, plumber, electrician or landscaper, most of your work probably comes from word of mouth. Even a recommended customer will look you up before they ring, and what they find decides whether they call you or the next name on the list. We are Ecomm Development, a small Shopify and Orbit Commerce studio in Kingsley, Northampton, and we build websites for tradesmen, builders and the merchants who supply them.
What a website for builders and tradesmen needs to do
A homeowner looking for a tradesperson wants to know three things. Are you a real, local business? Have you done work like mine? Do you cover my area? A good trade site answers all three quickly, then makes it easy to ask for a price.
Show you are real
Put your name, phone number and the towns you work in where people see them straight away. Add the trade memberships and insurance you actually hold, and link to your Google reviews.
Photos of your own work
Photos of finished jobs do more selling than anything else on a trade site. A gallery of kitchens, extensions, driveways or rewires, each captioned with the job and roughly where, shows a visitor what they would be paying for. Sharp phone photos are fine.
A quote form that asks the right questions
We build short quote forms that ask what you need to price a job: type of work, postcode, rough size, when they would like it done, and a place to upload a few photos. Enquiries land on your phone, so you can reply between jobs.
The areas you cover
If you work across Northampton, Wellingborough and the villages in between, say so. A short page for each area you genuinely cover, with jobs you have done there, reassures local customers and gives Google a reason to show you in that town.
Google Maps
For a search such as "website for tradesmen Northampton" or "plumber Northampton", the Google Maps results often appear above every website. We set up the on-page basics on every site, and our local SEO service can look after the Maps side. To see where you stand today, ask for our free Google Maps ranking report.
Websites for builders merchants and trade suppliers
A merchant or trade supplier needs a different kind of site. Customers want to search a range, check prices and stock, then buy online or collect from the counter. That is a job for a proper online shop.
Case study: Rock Bottom, Northampton
Rock Bottom is a builders merchant at 2 Ashburnham Road, Northampton. Their Shopify store carries thousands of products, with supplier stock kept in step with the site so customers see what is actually available. We also built a custom paint colour browser and visualiser, so customers can find a shade and see how it looks before they buy. Read the Rock Bottom case study.
We also built Northants Trade, a trade supplies store with a large range. So we deal with supplier data, changing prices, pack sizes and stock every day.
Shopify or Orbit Commerce?
We are a Shopify Partner and an Orbit Commerce Partner. Orbit Commerce suits trades who mainly need to be found and contacted. Shopify suits merchants and suppliers selling products online, with stock, trade pricing and click and collect.
If you already have a site that is not bringing in work, our website redesign page explains how we rebuild it.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a website if most of my work comes from recommendations?
Yes, in most cases. Recommended customers usually look you up before they call, and a clear site with photos of your work helps turn that check into an enquiry.
Can customers send photos of the job with their quote request?
Yes. We can add a photo upload to your quote form, along with questions about the type of work, postcode and timing, so you have what you need to give a rough price.
Can you build an online shop for a builders merchant or trade supplier?
Yes. We build trade catalogues on Shopify, including large ranges with stock levels, trade pricing and click and collect. Our work for Rock Bottom in Northampton is an example.
